UI/UX Design Intern

Katalyst Culture Creative is seeking a UI/UX Design Intern who understands that exceptional digital experiences solve real problems for real people. Working with our strategic creative team, you'll design user-centered digital interfaces for businesses, organizations, and leaders that are making meaningful community impact. This isn't about churning out wireframes in isolation, you'll participate in the complete design process from user research to usability testing, learning how to balance business objectives with human needs while creating accessible, inclusive digital experiences.   • Through this internship, you will develop professional skills and industry knowledge including:

    • Complete UI/UX Design Process – Experience the full lifecycle from user research and persona development through wireframing, prototyping, testing, and implementation

    • User-Centered Design Methodology – Apply Design Thinking frameworks to solve real business challenges through human-centered digital solutions

    • Responsive & Accessible Design – Learn to create interfaces that work seamlessly across devices while meeting WCAG accessibility standards for diverse users

    • Strategic Brand Integration – Understand how to translate brand identity systems into cohesive, on-brand digital experiences

    • Usability Testing & Research – Conduct user interviews, analyze findings, and iterate designs based on real user feedback

    • Design Systems Thinking – Learn to build and maintain component libraries, style guides, and scalable design systems

    • Cross-Functional Collaboration – Work alongside graphic designers, developers, and strategists to deliver integrated solutions

    • Professional Presentation Skills – Develop the ability to articulate design decisions, present concepts to clients, and defend your work with strategic rationale

    • Portfolio Development – Build a professional portfolio with real-world projects that demonstrate problem-solving, not just aesthetics

  • As a valued member of our digital design team, you will:

    • Assist senior designers with user research, interviews, and persona development

    • Create wireframes, user flows, and site maps for client digital projects

    • Develop low-fidelity and high-fidelity prototypes using Figma, Adobe XD, or Sketch

    • Support the design of responsive interfaces for websites and digital applications

    • Participate in usability testing sessions and synthesize findings into actionable insights

    • Contribute to brainstorming sessions and concept development for client projects

    • Help develop and maintain design systems and component libraries

    • Participate in internal design reviews and provide constructive peer feedback

    • Maintain organized design files, documentation, and version control

    • Research design trends, competitive digital experiences, and accessibility best practices

    • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Interaction Design, UX Design, Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or related field

    • Basic to intermediate proficiency with design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or Sketch

    • Understanding of fundamental UI/UX design principles, information architecture, and interaction design

    • Basic knowledge of responsive design concepts and mobile-first design approaches

    • Familiarity with Design Thinking methodology and user-centered design processes

    • Understanding of accessibility principles and inclusive design practices

    • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple projects

    • Ability to receive and implement constructive feedback with a growth mindset

    • Genuine passion for creating accessible, inclusive digital experiences for diverse audiences

    • Interest in working with minority-owned businesses and community-focused organizations

    • Minimum GPA of 3.0 (preferred)

    • Relevant coursework in UI/UX design, interaction design, user research, or information architecture

    • Ability to receive academic credit for the internship (preferred but not required)

    • Letter of recommendation from a faculty member (preferred)

  • A developing portfolio showcasing UI/UX projects that demonstrate your design thinking and process:

    • Examples of UI/UX projects (academic projects, personal projects, or case studies acceptable)

    • Process documentation showing your approach—not just final deliverables (user research, wireframes, iterations, testing results)

    • Wireframes, prototypes, user flows, or interactive mockups you've created

    • Evidence of problem-solving approach and how you arrived at design solutions

    • Any work demonstrating accessibility considerations or inclusive design (preferred)

    • Links to online portfolio, Figma files, or interactive prototypes must be included with application

  • Commitment: 15-20 hours per week during the academic semester, with potential for full-time hours (30-40 hours) during summer break

    Compensation: $15-20 per hour, depending on experience, skills, and academic progress

    Location: Hybrid with occasional virtual team meetings and collaborative work sessions

    Flexibility: Scheduling accommodates class schedules and academic commitments

    Duration: 3-4 months (semester-based) with strong possibility of extension based on performance and mutual interest

    Academic credit support available if required by your institution.
